It happens, keys brake, and it usually happens when we're in a hurry to get somewhere.

Here's two tips for what you can do if your key brakes in half:

1.  Keep both pieces!  It is usually easier for the Locksmith and cheaper for you if you have the pieces.

2.  If your key brakes in the ignition or door lock, don't make it worse by pushing it in further or jamming it.  It needs to come out immediately, so don't use the other piece to turn the ignition or lock.

1) Select the Lock Style

Do you need a Deadbolt, Lever, Knob, or Handle Set?  I suggest that all exterior doors have, at minimum, a Deadbolt (Handle Sets have a Deadbolt).

 2) Select the Brand

The two most popular brands you will find are Schlage and Kwikset.  One thing you need to keep in mind when purchasing new locks is that a Kwikset key will not fit into a Schlage lock, and vise versa.  So stick with one brand in order to have them rekeyed to the same key.  Here are some pictures of both the Schlage and Kwikset keys.

 3) Select the Lock Finish

Your preference here.  Just remember that there may be a color variance from one brand to another.

 4) Keys - Have all your locks keyed to match (rekeyed)

You should have one key on your keyring that gets you inside of your home.  If you have more keys on our keyring, you need to have your locks rekeyed.

Car dealerships either don’t know or don’t want to tell you that you can save lots of money by using a locksmith when you need a replacement key.  My guess is that it’s a little of both.  Before you fork over your hard-earned cash to replace a key that is lost, malfunctioning, or dead, make sure you have called My Locksmith first.

Before calling My Locksmith, make a short list of the following:

  1. Write down the year, make, and model of your vehicle.
  2. Write down your car's VIN number. In most cars, the VIN is located on the driver’s side dashboard and is visible through the windshield; it should also be listed on your insurance card.

If you have problems with either of these steps, don’t worry, we will help you out.

After obtaining the above information, we will come to your location and make you a new key.  Most cars manufactured in the last decade or so are equipped with transponder/chip keys.  They usually have a plastic key-head.  If you have a transponder type key, we will program it for you as well.

So remember, don’t call the dealership, call, My Locksmith918-814-8890.

Thanks,
Jaime

Beware of Big Box Stores

Could copies of the key to your front door be in the hands of strangers?

If you've purchased new locks from a big box store, the answer could be yes.  Homeowners need to know that many locks sold in the big name hardware stores are keyed-alike.  There may be five to ten locks per brand and style that are keyed alike on the shelf.  You buy two of them, so eight are left keyed just like your two.

Someone could be watching what locks you're buying and find out where you're installing those locks.  All they need to do is purchase a lock with the same key and now they have access to your home.

Here is how I recommend you protect yourself.
1.      Look at each lock’s box and find the key number.  Buy boxes   with different key numbers.
2.      Call My Locksmith and have your new locks re-keyed.

Having your locks re-keyed is quick process that will give you added security without breaking the bank.
