It happens, keys brake, and it usually happens when we're in a hurry to get somewhere.
Here's two tips for what you can do if your key brakes in half:
1. Keep both pieces! It is usually easier for the Locksmith and cheaper for you if you have the pieces.
2. If your key brakes in the ignition or door lock, don't make it worse by pushing it in further or jamming it. It needs to come out immediately, so don't use the other piece to turn the ignition or lock.

- Write down the year, make, and model of your vehicle.
- Write down your car's VIN number. In most cars, the VIN is located on the driver’s side dashboard and is visible through the windshield; it should also be listed on your insurance card.
Could copies of the key to your front door be in the hands of strangers?
If you've purchased new locks from a big box store, the answer could be yes. Homeowners need to know that many locks sold in the big name hardware stores are keyed-alike. There may be five to ten locks per brand and style that are keyed alike on the shelf. You buy two of them, so eight are left keyed just like your two.
Someone could be watching what locks you're buying and find out where you're installing those locks. All they need to do is purchase a lock with the same key and now they have access to your home.
Here is how I recommend you protect yourself.
1. Look at each lock’s box and find the key number. Buy boxes with different key numbers.
2. Call My Locksmith and have your new locks re-keyed.
Having your locks re-keyed is quick process that will give you added security without breaking the bank.
